Service Description: This thematic map summarizes racial and ethnic diversity in the United States. The index shows the likelihood that two persons chosen at random from the same area, belong to different race or ethnic groups. The index ranges from 0 (no diversity) to 100 (complete diversity). For example, the diversity score for the U.S. is 60 which means there is a 60 percent probability that two people randomly chosen from the U.S. population would belong to different race or ethnic groups. Diversity in the U.S. population is increasing. The states with the most diverse populations are California, New Mexico and Texas. The map has been designed to be displayed with semi-transparency of about 50% for overlay on other base maps, which is reflected in the legend for the map. The geography depicts states at greater than 25m scale, counties at 1m to 25m scale, Census Tracts at 250k to 1m scale, and Census Block Groups at less than 250k scale. ESRI 2009/2014 Demographic Data – ESRI analysts update more than 15,000 demographic attributes for eleven geographic levels by combining detailed information from multiple sources.
